Help the Driftless Folk School grow and thrive and participate in DFS classes for free.
During 2009, the Driftless Folk School grew by leaps and bounds. The number of classes offered and events organized expanded considerably, as did the number of students and participants in all DFS programs. Still, as the folk school enters its fifth year, it remains a grassroots, kitchen-table operation, in which all administrative and organizational work is done by a small group of volunteers out of a spirit of enthusiasm and service. It is clear that broader community involvement will be needed if the folk school is to grow and flourish in the way we hope and expect it to.
We also recognize that many of the folk school’s strongest potential supporters within the local community and beyond may find it difficult to participate in DFS classes due to the cost of class fees. Although our fees are modest compared with our peers in the folk school world, they are still a hurdle for many during these challenging economic times. Our local community here in the Driftless Region may be cash-poor, but it is very rich in community spirit, volunteerism, and committment to the ideals that inspire the Driftless Folk School.
It is because of these considerations that we are excited to announce the creation of the Driftless Folk School Core Volunteer Program. The basic concept of this initiative is simple: starting in April with the beginning of the Spring/Summer season, we will be seeking a dedicated group of volunteers willing to participate in the planning, publicizing, and execution of Driftless Folk School classes. Core Volunteers will be asked to participate in a short training session and they will then take part in one or more of the scheduled DFS classes as an official representative of the Driftless Folk School, distributing posters, working with instructors on class logistics and communications, promoting about other DFS classes, and more. In return, course fees will be waived for the Core Volunteer in each class.
If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity, or to sign up to become a Core Volunteer, please contact the Registrar.
