Instructor Bio — Shoua Yang
Shoua Yang was born in a refugee camp who resettled in the United States in the early 90s.
Growing up as a Hmong American, his work strongly reflects his journey through the struggles
of self-identity. Printmaking has allowed him to find a voice and create dialogues about the
Hmong diaspora.
After receiving his Bachelor in Studio Art from the University of Wisconsin-Stout, Shoua started
CeevTsegPress to share his work with the public. Over the years Shoua has led numerous
printmaking workshops, exhibited his work in the Twin cities and Wisconsin. He collaborated
with a group of local and international artists to produce a mural, and had his work published in
multiple independent magazines in the region. He has engaged with several communities through
the process of live-printing, to share his passion for printmaking.
Shoua’s work is a collection of abstract narratives inspired from Hmong folklores, mythologies,
cultural practices and spiritual beliefs with a slight blend of pop culture. Each story is told
through a variation of relief prints, and with every piece a story is carved into woodcuts, filled
with rich history.
